Tauranga U3A Creative Writers

Tauranga U3A Creative Writers have between 7 and 10 regular members who share a love of the written word.  They meet twice a month, 2nd and fourth Monday mornings from 9.45, usually at the same home in Ocean Beach Road, Mt. Maunganui.  After a cuppa and chat the group reads aloud any set homework.

Writing exercises include anything from spelling tests, spending 15 minutes writing in another style (like Shakespeare or Charles Dickens or Sam Hunt!), or creating a monosyllabic short story (a story with words of one syllable), and other brain food tests.     When time permits they read their own work which may be commented on, and edited individually or collectively.

U3A Wordsmiths Group

Our group of imaginative writers meet in various homes on the first and third Mondays of each month from 9.45 to 12 noon. Our activities include anything to do with writing and words. We enjoy spelling and dictionary quizzes, reading and critiquing each others work, discussing and learning from the master wordsmiths, the most famous being William Shakespeare.

Each of us has different styles and reasons for writing. Some have had work published, some are honing their skills toward children's writing, and others are planning to write their memoirs, or are meeting simply for the pleasure of writing and enjoying each others company. Yes, personalities are revealed, some closed cupboards are open and yes, we have a good laugh at the more comical stories. There are some ladies, no names here, who are a little risqué and one or two have shocked us with blood and guts and horror.

Their main objective is to encourage writing talents, enjoy social time together and to hone writing skills.

Currently there is a vacancy as two members are on leave. If you are interested contact Groups Facilitator Thelma Cane 574-6222, or Doreen Anderson, 576-3058.

This year the convenor is:  Janet Ormsby, Ph 576-5008.

Practical Art Group

1 meets on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month except December and January at the Tauranga Society of Artists’ rooms in Elizabeth Street West. For the remainder of this year we are being joined by the Monday Group because of reduced numbers. So…. In 2010 we will be looking for new members to fill both groups.

During the year we have a tutor once a month and on the other sessions our convener Mary Brooks arranges a varied programme. We are a friendly happy group who enjoy our artistic endeavours and some members have even sold some of their creations.

No one should hesitate to join us if they want to full fill a long held urge try their hand at creating artistic work. We all started out as beginners.
